The Clinical-Scientific Report of the Meyer University Hospital is a precious tool for the sharing and dissemination of information that synthesises the method of working, the results and the paths for improvement to which particular efforts need to be devoted. It is therefore an evaluation tool aimed at both the interior and the exterior of the Hospital. It is a dynamic instrument, which ought to be refined in parallel with the improvements pursued by the Hospital itself.

Tracing Hospital Boundaries explores, for the first time, how the forces of both integration and segregation shaped hospitals and their communities between the eleventh and twentieth centuries in Europe, North America and Africa. Within this broad comparative context it also shines a light on a number of case studies from Southeastern Europe. The eleven chapters show how people’s access to, and experience of, healthcare institutions was affected by social, cultural and economic, as well as medical, dynamics. These same factors intersected with developing healthcare technologies to shape hospital design and location, as well as internal policies and practices. The volume produces a new history of the hospital in which boundaries – both physical and symbolic – are frequently contested and redrawn. Contributors are Irena Benyovsky Latin, David Gentilcore, Annemarie Kinzelbach, Rina Kralj-Brassard, Ivana Lazarević, Clement Masakure, Anna Peterson, Egidio Priani, Gordan Ravančić, Jonathan Reinarz, Jane Stevens Crawshaw, David Theodore, Christina Vanja, George Weisz, and Valentina Živković.

This volume carries out a study with the aim to assess any flaw in the care, hospital and local services in the event of disasters with medium to long-term implications. The method features a set of indicators applied to three parameters (suitability, efficiency and quality of the health services). The project’s aim is to identify the vulnerability of the hospitals in Florence in the event that the area of the Municipality and its surroundings are affected by a major emergency, with partial or complete damage to the continuity of care in hospitals. Furthermore, strategies and plans are proposed to maintain business continuity even in the event of such an emergency.

"Durban's McCord Hospital, this book argues, is one of the most important hospitals of the twentieth century. Founded 'for the Zulu' in 1909 by American Christian missionaries, Dr James B. McCord and Margaret Mellen McCord, for more than a century it was a centre of affordable health care for the underprivileged of many faiths, cultures and political persuasions. It also pioneered the training of black nurses, midwives and doctors and was supported by prominent figures such as John L. Dube and Chief Albert Luthuli."--

The clinical-scientific report 2007-2009 of the Meyer Hospital is the annotated description of the activities stemming from the two elements that make up the 'mission' of the structure: health care and research. It has been structured in such a way that the integration between these two functions emerges as an essential element for the pursuit of hospital excellence. For those working in the hospital the work undoubtedly represents a useful stimulus for meditation and self-assessment regarding the activities performed; at the same time it also offers an ulterior tool for making the Meyer better known beyond the hospital itself.
